I went for my first ever PSA check in February 2012 (age 50), never imagining it would be high, the urologist had said everything was OK after he had done his probing around. The PSA value was 7.8. I was totally shocked when I was told that I needed a biopsy (I wasn†™t told of the alternatives, only that this must be done). As the doctor had taken the blood after probing my prostate with his finger (can†™t help the PSA level) I decided to change Urologists. I had a new PSA check done in April 2012 which was 7.5, still high.

Even though I wasn†™t at all sure whether I was doing the right thing, I had a biopsy; the result was frightening, a Gleason score of 3+4=7 and T1c. So I had cancer, what to do now. I researched all of the possible treatments, all had down sides. In the end I decided that a prostatectomy offered the best hope of coming out of this cancer free. I was told that my chances of being continent and being able to have an erection after the operation were good.

I had the operation in the Martini clinic in Hamburg in July 2012, I apparently suffered a haematoma during the operation (I guess these things can happen anywhere), the blood I was told collected in the muscle at the top of my leg, which made walking quite painful, otherwise it all went well. The pathology report was quite sobering, the tumor had been comparatively large but luckily not spread outside of the prostate. At least I went home knowing that I didn†™t need any further treatment. All in all, the doctors and nurses at the clinic were very good. I think I was lucky to have had my operation there.

The incontinence after the operation was very annoying; I did my exercises regularly however and went on a REHA for 3 weeks. In October, just 3 months after the operation, I was completely continent, I could run, jump, kneel, in fact everything. This was a huge relief for me. For at least 5 months after the operation I had a constant overwhelming urge that I need to urinate. Even though I knew that I had only just been, I often could not resist trying again. Luckily this constant urge to urinate has lessened in the last 2 months.

My erection has up until now (8 months after the operation) not returned, no nightly erections. It has recently shown signs that it is not completely dead, but it still has a long way to go. I tried Viagra and Levithra, which made me feel terrible and didn†™t work anyway. I now use a vacuum pump and hope things will improve in time. I have read some peoples stories here, where their erection has only returned after 1 or even 2 years, this does give me hope, but at the same time depresses me.

My PSA values after the operation have all been less that 0.1, which at least for me means that I am for the time being cancer free. I am continent and feel fit. I have totally changed my diet and lifestyle. I am implementing other personal changes that I should have done far sooner. So I should feel good, but I don†™t. The fact that my erection might never come back seriously depresses me, how silly is that. All I can do is hope and try not to get too depressed when nothing happens.
